Impossible…Deontay Wilder Holds On To No.1 Heavyweight Ranking Despite Knockout By Tyson Fury

Published

on

Deontay Wilder has retained his spot at the top of the World Boxing Council’s rankings, despite losing his last two fights against Tyson Fury. The Gypsy King claimed the WBC world heavyweight title from Wilder when he defeated him with a seventh-round stoppage in February 2020.

He followed that up with another victory in their trilogy fight in Las Vegas earlier this month, this time with an 11th-round knockout to cement his place at the top of the tree in the heavyweight division.

Despite that, Wilder remains the number one ranked fighter in the WBC’s list, ahead of former unified world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr and Joe Joyce.

As champion, Fury does not feature in the rankings, likewise interim champion Dillian Whyte, who is the mandatory challenger for Fury’s belt.

The pair look set to meet each other, should Whyte come through his bout with Otto Wallin on October 30.

Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and his successor Oleksandr Usyk do not feature in the WBC rankings either, with the latter holding the rest of the heavyweight division’s belts.

Despite his back-to-back defeats to Fury, Wilder remains well-positioned as he plots his next move.

The Bronze Bomber received a six-month suspension following his knockout at the hands of the Gypsy King, and has undergone surgery on his right hand
